Saying of the Week

Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.

TCAC News

Hello TCAC members:

As we move to the summer our schedule is going to change and we are moving towards training to the Long Course meet schedule. Our schedule at the YMCA will remain as it is until June 13th. Then we will move to changing the Y schedule, but actually the other pool times will remain the same, essentially. We have just recently had to drop the Tues and Thur practices at the YMCA in order to cover all our practices as well as dropped the Camp Young pool until September. The schedule up until June 13th is as attached (pasted if possible). We strongly recommend swimmers attempt going to the Fleet Rec Practices if they are planning on swimming long course meets...however, if that is not convenient or feasible, then we understand and will continue to challenge all groups at the other pools to get ready for meets as well. For the short term, we are renting the Sat morning practices for the White, Blue and Senior teams at PA Rec Center, 9:30am to 11:00am to help members in that area with having a closer location once a week. Rec center membership is not required as we are renting the 2 lanes. Our summer schedule will remain as it is at both Fleet Rec and Little Creek, with only minor changes due to out of town meets and spreading our coaching staff thin. Our YMCA times will be similar to last year and there will be Mon - Thur morning practices beginning at 9am for all groups and afternoon practices at 5pm for the Red and White groups. Our summer practice schedule should be finalized and we would be adding times and/or practices than what we have already.

Onto our coaching staff updates. Long overdue is word of an addition to the assistant coaching staff: Patrick Frisk has been brought on, helping out all our groups on a part-time basis. Patrick swam for me in his younger years and then swam for Cox High School Varsity, making States both individually and leading his relays. Patrick swam for ODU for one year, but dropped in order to put more time towards his studies. Patrick still has a love for the water as he swims and surfs as much as possible while he maintained his studies at ODU. He will be graduating this month and wants to continue coaching for TCAC through the summer and beyond. Many of the swimmers have had the chance to meet him, but it has been late in formally introducing Patrick to the parents by email, etc. On as personal note, I was lucky to coach Patrick as he made his first move from summer league into year round swimming and think he will fit in with our staff well.

We are in the process of looking for another coach help with some duties as we look into expanding and possibly using Fleet Rec in the longer term, possibly maintaining a group throughout the year (besides weekends). Our practices on the weekends have grown in popularity over the past year, and the potential for a few weekday practices continuing into the fall would open a need for more assistance to the staff. We have been fortunate to have Andy Paryzek and Carl Casamassina help us out when we were short lately. Curtis, Penny, Kathie and I will continue to coach our groups, but hope to have help as we begin to look at expanding and growing the team.

Now for the Summer Training trip: We will be making the trip again this summer to Wintergreen, Out-of-Bounds and Busch Gardens. Unfortunately, there is a change in the dates we had planned and we had to move the trip as Coach Curtis being unavailable for the original dates. The trip details are as follows:

Who: 11 & older swimmers What: Our Summer 4th ANNUAL ROAD TRIP: We will be training, attending the Swim meet at Lynchburg, having Fun at Busch Gardens and...more training. When: June 28 - July 1 (sorry for the change) Where: Busch Gardens, Lynchburg meet on Sunday only, Wintergreen Resort, Sheranda Lake and, of course Charlottesville & UVA!! How: Curtis and I will be driving vans and we are planning on staying for part of the time in...CABINS! How Much: We hope to keep the costs down and I will be setting up car washes to help alleviate the costs for the group before we go. We should be able to keep the costs for the trip per swimmer at about $130 unless we can make enough to pay for a lot of it with car washes, etc.

So, did you notice the thing about the PINK CAPS? Yes, they are available. Kathie will have them at practices for sale. These are silicon bright pink caps with black and white flag TCAC logo. We were hoping to use them as a fundraiser prize, but have decided to get them out to the team. They look great and can be used for practices or meets. Get yours next practice or let Kathie know if you would like, but there are a limited amount at this time. More will be ordered if necessary.

Seeya at the pool!
